Reunion to bring junior high students together

ACUSHNET — High school reunions are an American tradition, but one that Acushnet residents have been missing out on for years.
In the absence of a town high school, Acushnet students have long been farmed out to other school districts, thereby ending the camaraderie between Acushnet students.
Although many Acushnet students attend reunions for the high school they attended, several members of the class of 1969 have joined forces to organize a junior high reunion.
"Most of us knew each other for over nine years, and watched each other grow as children and teenagers," said Julie Marchetti, one of the reunion's organizers.
Eighty-five students from Acushnet's then five elementary schools entered Acushnet Junior High School, which was renamed Albert F. Ford Junior High during their stay. On Sept. 2, most of them will gather at the Century House in Acushnet for a long-overdue reunion.
According to Ms. Marchetti, more than 50 former students have said they will attend the reunion.
Organizers have been gathering old photographs to display at the reunion. They also have put together a reunion CD, featuring 25 of the most popular songs from that era.
